What is a DAW?

What is a DAW?

A DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is the software musicians use to make music on a computer. Think of it as a recording studio on your screen. You record, arrange, mix, and produce entire songs in it.

Popular DAWs include Ableton Live, FL Studio, REAPER, and Logic Pro. BeatSage connects to your DAW and teaches you how to use it by doing things right inside it.

No install needed

Don't have a DAW yet?

No problem. BeatSage also works with Strudel, a browser-based music environment. You can start learning right now without installing anything.

When you are ready for more, download a free trial of Ableton Live or REAPER and BeatSage will teach you there too.

Watch BeatSage teach a complete beat from scratch in under 2 minutes.

BeatSage
You Teach me a hip-hop beat
BeatSage Let's build one together. I'll start with a kick and snare pattern on Track 1.
Creating MIDI clip... KK|x---x---|x---x---|
SN|----x---|----x---|
HC|x-x-x-x-|x-x-x-x-|
BeatSage Press play and listen. That's a basic boom-bap groove. Now let's add some swing to the hi-hats.
Humanizing notes... Timing jitter: 15ms, velocity variation: 12%
BeatSage Hear the difference? That swing is what separates a stiff loop from a groove. Ready for the bass line?

Every lesson happens in your DAW. You hear it, see it, and learn by doing it.

Stuck on an 8-bar loop for the third hour

BeatSage teaches you to develop it into a full arrangement, section by section

Watching a 45-minute tutorial to learn one technique

BeatSage demonstrates it on your project in 30 seconds. You hear it immediately.

Mix sounds muddy but you can't figure out why

BeatSage puts an EQ on your bass, carves the mud, and shows you the difference

Why BeatSage

It doesn't just explain. It shows you.

What is a DAW?

A DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is software for making music on a computer. Ableton Live, FL Studio, REAPER, and Logic Pro are popular DAWs. If you don't have one yet, BeatSage also works with Strudel, a free browser-based music environment that requires no installation.

Will it make music for me?

No. BeatSage teaches YOU to make music. It demonstrates techniques in your DAW, explains what it did and why, and invites you to try it yourself. You are always in control.

Do I need to know music theory?

No. BeatSage teaches theory through practice. You will learn scales and chords by hearing them in your own tracks, not from a textbook.

Is this a plugin?

No. BeatSage is a desktop app that connects to your DAW. It runs alongside Ableton Live (or FL Studio, REAPER soon) and communicates directly with it.

Do I need any other subscriptions?

No. The free tier runs entirely on your computer with no additional accounts or subscriptions. Paid tiers unlock more advanced lessons and features.

Which DAWs are supported?

Ableton Live (10, 11, and 12), FL Studio, and REAPER at launch. Logic Pro is on the roadmap.

Is my music private?

Yes. Everything runs on your computer. Your projects and audio never leave your machine.

Can I use BeatSage with a screen reader?

Yes. BeatSage is fully compatible with NVDA, JAWS, and VoiceOver. Every tool and lesson works through text conversation, so nothing depends on seeing a visual interface. REAPER users with OSARA get the most integrated experience. We also support full keyboard navigation and visible focus indicators throughout the app.

Music production was never
designed to be accessible

Most DAWs assume you can see a timeline, drag a fader, and click tiny buttons. BeatSage works differently. Every action is available through conversation, keyboard, or screen reader. No mouse required.

Full screen reader support
Works with NVDA, JAWS, and VoiceOver. REAPER + OSARA users get first-class support with spoken DAW feedback.
Keyboard-only workflow
Every tool, lesson, and menu is reachable without a mouse. Full focus management and visible focus indicators throughout.
Teach by conversation, not UI
Type what you want to learn. BeatSage demonstrates it in your DAW and explains every step. No visual interface required.
Adaptive learning for every body
Lessons adapt to your input method. Whether you use a keyboard, switch device, or braille display, the curriculum meets you where you are.

Designed with WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines in mind. Keyboard navigation, focus management, and screen reader semantics tested with NVDA.
